Plaque Prevention Gel (Home Kit)

What is plaque prevention gel?

Plaque prevention gel (brand name Oravet® Plaque Prevention Gel) is applied to a pet’s teeth at home to create an invisible barrier that will help prevent plaque and tartar formation on the exterior parts of the tooth (the crown). It can be used on both dogs and cats.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not review non-drug health products (e.g., herbals, nutraceuticals, shampoos, and other supplements) for safety or effectiveness before they are sold to the public. Manufacturers of non-drug health products must ensure their products are safe and labeled accurately.

The FDA requires that these non-pharmaceuticals contain a disclaimer that says, “This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” Health Canada licenses “veterinary health products” after reviewing safety, efficacy, and manufacturing information provided by the manufacturer. These products are not tested by Health Canada.

"Your veterinarian is the best source of information
about the safety of non-drug health products in pets."

Your veterinarian is the best source of information about the safety of non-drug health products in pets. Just because a product is natural does not mean it is safe. All medicines and medicinal plants are potentially toxic if used inappropriately or given at high doses. Supplements can also have side effects, like pharmaceuticals. Few supplements and herbs have been subjected to rigorous scientific trials to determine their efficacy.

Although the information in this handout may be helpful, it may also be incomplete and may not represent the full range of effects the supplement could have on your pet.

How do I give my pet plaque prevention gel?

Plaque prevention gel comes as a take-home kit recommended for use starting two weeks after your veterinarian performs a prophylactic (preventative) dental cleaning.

  • Before applying plaque prevention gel, wipe any excess saliva from the front of your pet’s teeth and gums, using a paper towel or a clean, dry cloth.
  • Peel back the protective cover from one tray of plaque prevention gel.
  • Put a generous amount of gel on the applicator.
  • While holding your pet’s mouth closed, lift the upper lip on one side and spread the gel on the upper front teeth and gums at the gum line.
  • Next, spread the gel on the lower teeth and gums at the gum line.
  • Repeat the same procedure on the other side of the mouth.
  • Discard the applicator and any leftover gel.
  • The gel is odorless, tasteless, and invisible once applied.

If you have difficulty getting your animal to accept the gel, contact your veterinarian or pharmacist for tips to help with dosing and reduce the stress of medication time for both you and your animal.

This fast-acting product should take effect quickly, although effects may not be noted outwardly until several applications have been applied.

What if I miss giving my pet a treatment?

If you miss an application, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled application, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not give the pet two doses at once.

Are there any potential side effects from plaque prevention gel?

Your pet may have no reaction after the first few doses but may develop a sensitivity later. It is important to watch for signs of an allergic reaction over the entire course of treatment.

Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian immediately. This long-acting product should stop working within one week.
